Field Set For Kentucky Derby 136

Field Set For Kentucky Derby 136

Jackson Bend is the newest of our 2010 Kentucky Derby contenders and this is one of the entries you’ll want to keep a close eye on.

The 2010 Kentucky Derby horse racing betting future odds are up and you can get 18/1 on Jackson Bend right now.  You’ll want to take that before this weekend’s race because it’s very possible that Jackson Bend becomes the favorite if he wins the Holy Bull Stakes.

This is the one horse amongst the 2010 Kentucky Derby contenders’ potential field that produced the fastest Beyer speed figure for two turns in North America as a 2-year old, and you have to put Jackson Bend up at the top of the list along with Looking at Lucky and Buddy’s Saint.

Jackson Bend stumbled to 2nd in his first race, but has since reeled off 5 straight victories at Calder.  This horse can flat out fly and proved he’s deserves to be amongst the favorites for the 2010 Kentucky Berby after stumbling badly at the start of the In Reality before coming from way back to seize victory. The Gulfstream race has Jackson Bend as the favorite, and this will be a great test to see exactly where this 3-year old fits into the Kentucky Derby picture.  Other premier contenders such as Aikenite and Piscitelli are also involved and we’ll have our picks and predictions up on the day of the race.

I am so thrilled for McCarthy. He retired in 1990 as a High School principal. He is very lucky to have General Quarters, and yes, he is on the Derby trail watch. McCarthy is right up there on the list of trainers such as Baffert, Tagg, Asmussen, Frankel, Ward, and so on. General Quarters won his first Stakes race last week in the Sam Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay. This horse is showing a lot of promise, and with McCarthy's love and climbing experience, I hope he hits the jackpot.

I always go to Thoroughbred Times. They have information on all of the Derby horses, including their jockey, trainer, winnings, pedigree, last workout, and how the horses have done in recent races.

1 West Side Bernie: 30-1

2 Musket Man: 20-1

3 Mr. Hot Stuff: 30-1

4 Advice: 30-1

5 Hold Me Back: 15-1

6 Friesan Fire: 6-1

7 Papa Clem: 20-1

8 Mine That Bird: 50-1

9 Join in the Dance: 50-1

10 Regal Ransom: 30-1

11 Chocolate Candy: 20-1

12 General Quarters: 20-1

13 I Want Revenge: 3-1

14 Atomic Rain: 50-1

15 Dunkirk: 4-1

16 Pioneer of the Nile: 4-1

17 Summer Bird: 50-1

18 Nowhere to Hide: 50-1

19 Desert Party: 15-1

20 Flying Private: 50-1

I Want Revenge is the favorite, but I believe that Friesian Fire has a lot of potential to win, and his pedigree is amazing. Hope this helps!

Well, if we look at what we have so far, most of the Kentucky Derby prep races have been won by horses either on or just off of the lead. With such speed it could set the Kentucky Derby up for a late-running type like Ice Box, Ice Box has a stalking running style, with a great turn of foot, and the pedigree to get ten furlongs. His Florida Derby final time showed that he didn't just take advantage of the pace melt down… he could do the distance… and his successfully strive to the wire, all this shows he has what it takes. I really like Ice Box, he shows all the necessary requirements for the Kentucky Derby, and should do quite well.

There are quite of few races left yet on the road to the derby. Other horses that have potential are:

Eskendereya
Lookin' At Lucky
Interactif
Sidney's Candy
Conveyance

It's OK to bet, unless your under age, it helps the horse racing industry. It's a great sport to follow regardless. Good Luck and enjoy the Kentucky Derby, Saturday May 1ST 2010 !

Current contenders can be found at http://www.kentuckyderby.info/kentuckyderby-contenders.php However, things can change, and with approx. less than 4 weeks to the Kentucky Derby the field was the favorite in the final pool of the Future Wager for the first time ever, showing just how wide-open this year's renewal will be. On Thursday April 1, the supplemental nominations were announced, with just 6 paying the $6000 fee to get in. With so many upsets lately, it looks like it will may need a record high amount of graded stakes earnings to make the Derby field and all 6 of the late nominees will have to win big in their final prep to draw in. Topping the list of new faces is Gotham Stakes (G3) runner-up Yawanna Twist who has $50,000 in graded earnings and is currently #46 on the earnings list and will need to finish better than third in Saturday's Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in order to have a chance at making the Kentucky Derby field.
If any additional horses not already nominated want to enter, they will have to be supplemented. Cost for this is $200,000 for the Kentucky Derby and $100,000 for the Preakness and Belmont. Even if a horse is supplemented, he is the lowest in priority for getting in the race with any early or late nominee getting preference over him. For the early and late nominees, graded stakes earnings determine their priority with the field limited to 20 starters for the Kentucky Derby with no also-eligibles allowed.

The early nomination period for the three Triple Crown races closed January 16 and 366 3-year-olds were made eligible for the three-race series at that time. The six late nominees bring the overall nomination total for 2010 to 372.

2010 Late Triple Crown Nominations

Yawanna Twist – Trainer – Richard Dutrow Jr.
Raise the Bridle – Trainer – Henry Dominguez
Carnivore – Triner – Joseph Delozier III
Game Ball – Trainer – Mark Casse
Posse Power – Trainer Frank Lucarelli
Thomas Baines -Trainer – Doug O’Neill

I don't know if you're new to horse racing, if the case you might find the above confusing, I apologize if so..however, if you check the link list above often it should bring you up to date. There are several prep races left leading up to the Derby, those races are very important and will tell the store of what horses will be raceing and those that will not.

Enjoy the Kentucky Derby May 1ST.

With 20 horses and still time, it's hard to pick just one horse, just yet….but I'm getting there…lol! However, at the moment, I have two horses that are my Top Choice(s) (others see below)-

I feel Eskendereya and/or Ice Box have a good chance to win the Derby…of course, anything can happen in a field of 20. I Look for Horses with good tactical speed and the ability to stalk, they have preference over pure speed or rally from way back types. Proven ability to handle bad traffic situations is also a plus in the Kentucky Derby. Ice Box meets all those. Ice Box – He broke his maiden in October at the Meadowlands, and then followed that up with an allowance win at Gulfstream in January. He made his stakes debut in the Fountain of Youth (G2) on February 20, finishing 5th beaten 12 lengths, and then came back to win the Florida Derby (G1) on March 20 earning a career-best 99 Beyer.

Eskendereya – Won the Pilgrim (G3) at Belmont Park in October, and then was a distant 9th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. In his first start of 2010, he won a 1 mile allowance race at Gulfstream Park on January 7. He won the Fountain of Youth (G2) on February 20, earning a career-best 106 Beyer, following that up with a win in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct on April 3.

Others contenders consider:

Reasons..the facts Speak for themselves-

~ Lookin At Lucky -An impressive 5 for 6 last year including the Best Pal (G2), Del Mar Futurity (G1), Norfolk (G1), and then the CashCall Futurity (G1) to close out his 2-year-old campaign. His only defeat was a second place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but he still won the Eclipse Award for Champion 2-year-old Male. He shipped to Oaklawn Park to win the Rebel (G2) on March 13, earning a career-best 98 Beyer, then finished 3rd in a troubled trip in the Santa Anita Derby on April 3.

~ Sidney’s Candy – April 3, Grade I Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita, 1 1/8 Mile. Sidney's Candy duplicated his front-running win from the Grade II San Felipe.
The front end of the race is simple to recap. Sidney's Candy set fractions of :24.00, :48.50 and 1:12.33. From there, he just kept running and finished the 1 1/8-mile race in 1:48 flat, defeating a wide, closing Setsuko by 4 1/2 lengths.

~ Endosement – March 28, Grade III Sunland Derby, Sunland Park, 1 1/8 Mile. Endorsement was the first and only horse to challenge pacesetter–and strong favorite—Conveyance in the early going. At the top of the stretch, the challenge was over, and Endorsement ran off to win by three lengths.

~ Conveyance- is the type of horse that has a lot of speed, and looks like one of those horses who go to the lead and dare you to catch him. Conveyance was not far behind in the above race with Endorsement. The winner was timed in 1:48.46 after Conveyance set early fractions of :23.71, :48.04 and 1:11.91. Endorsement had grabbed the lead shortly before the furlong marker, at which point his time was 1:35.88.

Still studying past performances..there's a lot to consider yet..

Enjoy the race :)
